To the gurus like whattheheck, would you be able to point me to the right direction of removing the headliner and all pillars for an E39 touring? I'm planning to redo the headliner with alcantara? thanks in advance!!!!

sun roof needs to come out to do this, thats ctually the first step. i think there is a diy on either bfc or m5board. ill try to find it when i get a chance. its a ton of wokr though. the pillars all pop off, but the sunroof is a serious pita.

havent seen tyrone post for a while now.

but back on topic.

"You have to pop the sunroof in tilt and remove the glass, and then the tiny torx screws around the frame holding the headliner on.

youre gona have to take out the moon roof so do that first that is the key then take out all the torx around the sunroof then take it all off from there

Jo, here is the basic procedure I did a few years back for sunroof cassette removal. Just ignore the parts that directly involve the cassette, though you will need to remove the glass in order to release the black metal frame surrounding the lid opening.

The procedure is similar for a touring, except you also have D-pillars to remove, there are 3 clips at the very back of the headliner as well as the additional light, and of course the liner comes out the rear hatch and not through the doors.

tools needed: T10, T20, and T25 Torx, slotted screwdriver

slide back shade
tilt sunroof up
grab one fold of rubber gaiter on each side and gently pull out from top
remove 3 T25 Torx screws holding glass lid on each side (from the inside)
lift up and remove lid
remove little T10 screws holding in black sunroof frame
remove C-pillar, upper B pillar, and A pillar trim
remove center interior light unit and trim panel cover
remove visors and lights behind them
remove all grab handles
remove front and rear headrests and recline seats all the way
gently pull headliner toward rear of car and down
remove through one of the rear doors (hardest part of job)
remove drive unit for sunroof
detach 4 drain tubes at each corner of sunroof cassette
unplug interior motion sensor and undo clips holding wiring harness
use slotted screw driver to gently bend out tabs securing plastic insert on cassette to front of roof (near drive unit)
remove T25 Torx screws holding cassette
release two clips at rear holding cassette
lower cassette and slowly and carefully remove from one of rear doors (sharp edges, so protect interior)

Good luck
